NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

The engagement programs and Summit culminated in a presentation of ideas to the Lord Mayor Clover Moore and councillors at an official event on August 22nd.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) takes place every year. The NCCD is a collection that counts:•the number of school students receiving an adjustment or ‘help’ due to disability•the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students. Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. Schools provide this information to education authorities.

Talented author and illustrator Matt Cosgrove spent the morning with Year 7 discussing the inspiration behind his brilliant and funny novels 'Epic Fail Tales'. The talk tied in perfectly with Year 7's current study of Fairy Tale Appropriation. Students enjoyed learning more about life as an author, and how to create funny illustrations. Thank you Matt Cosgrove.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Congratulations Year 11 Physics students Binh, Jin, and Michael on achieving a Bronze Award in the finals of the 2018 STANSW Young Scientists Awards for their solar heating project.

These enterprising young students tested concepts of thermodynamics to create an alternative solution to a conventional hot water system. The system needed to heat 1 litre of water by 10 degrees in an hour.

The students designed and developed experiments to test the requirements for the system. Their final design was based on reusable household materials. Students also submitted a comprehensive report.

Competition at the event was strong. Adjudicators were required to read hundreds of submissions from school students across NSW.

The team was presented with their Bronze Award at a special ceremony at the University of Wollongong.

Marrickville High School is using unique cross-curricular teaching techniques in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) to engage students in Shakespeare as part of its inaugural Shakespeare Carnival held on Friday 11th May.

Drama teacher Zan Cross said, "The Shakespeare Carnival gives our students the opportunity to celebrate and explore the works of William Shakespeare in unique ways and to encourage the growth of creative arts at Marrickville High School".

In preparation for the carnival, selected students in Years 7 – 10 participated in a series of acting workshops. This group of students forms the Shakespeare Ensemble, who have regularly rehearsed in preparation for performances on the day of the carnival.

The workshops were run by professional actors Christopher Tomkinson, Sophie Gregg, Justin Smith, and Huw McKinnon, all of whom have worked with Sydney Shakespeare companies Bell Shakespeare and Sport For Jove.

In a cross-faculty approach, students also participated in "Shakespeare in STEAM workshops" on the day of the carnival. Students used Computer Aided Design and 3D printing techniques to create Shakespearean props, including a 3D-printed version of Yorick's skull from Hamlet. Smoke and light experiments in Science were used to produce a variety of stage effects that could be used in the first scene of Macbeth.

Two teams from Marrickville High School will join other high schools at the Regional Shakespeare Carnival on June 4.

Anthony Albanese visits Marrickville High School

Phase two of the stunning installation on the Sydenham Fence was officially opened by Anthony Albanese MP.

Marrickville High School P&C commissioned this artwork as part of the "Inside Out" project that aims to change the facade of our school to match the vibrancy within.

The fence art was designed by artist Nuha Saad in collaboration with Marrickville High School students in 2016. It reflects three aspects - the journey and exploration students take going through high school, the geography of the Cooks River near where the school resides and the diversity of the school community. The artwork is designed as a six-piece panel.

The project has been funded through P&C fundraising, ticket sales from Moonlight Movies@Marrickville, sponsorship from local business and local federal government grants. The five street perimeter fence will be completed in 2018.

From the Wednesday 14 March 2018 the school will be using Sentral ‘student and Parent Portal' (website) for all communication.

The Portal, hosted by 'Sentral' provides both parents and students discreet information about each child's progress in our school and direct communication with school and parent, parent and teacher and student and teacher via a portal (website) and smart phone app (currently only available to parents).

All students have been granted access to their student portal at the start of 2018. They log onto their portal using their DoE portal user name and password.

Parents were sent an email to their preferred family email account yesterday (Tuesday 13 March 2018). They have been granted access to their child's data via a unique 'Access Key' sent to them in the email. They received two access keys in the email, each access key can only be used once (one person register). the following links are available on our website in 'Communications - Parent Portal' to support the setup process.

MHS welcomes The Sapphires

Two wonderful members of The Sapphires sister's Beverly Griggs and Laurel Robinson, visited our English and History students. They recalled their experiences living on a mission, performing for the troops in Vietnam, not even know where Vietnam was, and finding themselves in the middle of a war zone. The women spoke openly about their life in rural Australia, their dreams and hopes, work and future plans.

Our students asked many questions as the information linked with their study of the film in English, and their study of The Stolen Generation and the Vietnam War examined by the same students in History.

We all felt a heartfelt connection with Beverly and Laurel and are grateful for their time.

Official Opening of Support Unit Sensory Room

Marrickville High School today opened the new Sensory Room as part of the Support Unit for students with special needs. The Sensory Room was a dream of a young Marrickville student named Ethan, who wanted a learning space that was relaxing, imaginative and tactile. Ethan's family worked with the State Government's Building Community Partnerships to raise funds to build the Sensory Room, which was opened today by the Hon Jo Haylen MP. Thank you to the Autism Community Network, Ethan and his family, and our dedicated teaching and support staff for helping to bring Ethan's dream to fruition.

Sport plays an important role in a Marrickville High School education, and recently six Marrickville High School Year 10 PASS students were selected to attend a leadership camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation in Narrabeen. The students were selected after demonstrating strong leadership and organisational skills whilst participating in the PSC Learning to Lead program.

At the camp, students were involved in a range of challenging activities that developed their critical thinking, problem solving, organisational, communication and conflict resolutions skills. Activities included raft building, blindfold canoeing, team challenge obstacle courses and night activities where students created and implemented games for their peers.

The program has helped MHS students to be confident, and prepared to take on leadership roles within the school and their local communities.
