Principal's message

Whether you are a casual visitor, or an incoming or existing member of our school community, or merely curious as to all things Marrickville High School, welcome to our website.

As the local, comprehensive public high school, we proud to support our thriving Marrickville community. As you will see as you journey through our site, we are focused on providing students with an array of opportunities to support them in their educational journey within and beyond the classroom.

We have established strong connections with our local Primary schools, and these relationships provide our local Primary school students and their teachers opportunities to connect with our staff and facilities. In working collegially with our Primary colleagues, we are building strong learning pathways to support student transition to high school.

We have incredibly skilled teachers who understand the nuanced nature of learning across all courses from the foundational skills in Year 7 through to the complexities of the HSC. We recognise that every student is capable of growth and that is reflected in our NAPLAN data and the significant number of Band 5 and 6 results as well as the elimination of results in the lower Bands in the HSC. The achievements of our students through the support of our expert staff have been recognised at a state level.

Our focus on explicit teaching and discipline literacy, coupled with the opportunity for students to access a broad curriculum, has ensured continued year on year improvement in student achievement across all Year groups.

We value the positive impact that our diverse community brings to our school culture, and we work in partnership with our students and families to meet students at their point of need, academically, socially and emotionally.

Most Improved School for HSC Results

Marrickville High School, your local comprehensive school, is proud to be recognised among the top four most improved schools in NSW and the top two in Sydney for HSC results from 2015 to 2024.

Our school’s continued excellence in academic achievement saw MHS ranked in the top 24 schools in NSW for growth in the top two performance bands (Band 5 and Band 6) in the 2024 HSC.

This follows our strong result in the 2023 HSC, where we were placed among the top 14 schools in the state for growth across the top three bands (Band 4, Band 5 and Band 6), a result also acknowledged by the State Government.

The NSW Department of Education has recognised 14 metropolitan and 10 regional and rural public high schools for high growth in their 2024 HSC results, selected from 452 public high schools that guide more than 70 000 Year 12 students each year through to the HSC.

At Marrickville High School, our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) programs foster and equip students with the skills to think critically and creatively, problem solve, exercise higher order thinking in a rapidly changing world. Our focus is to develop students across the 4 domains of potential - Intellectual, Creative, Physical, and Social-Emotional. We recognise that students can excel in one or more of these areas and support them accordingly.
