On a lovely cool day for football the slick surface of Arlington Oval was a great location for the first CHS football knockout game of the year. The girls were keen and played tough against the green of Caringbah HS.
The game was played in the middle of the park for the majority of the first half with a rare number of balls making it into the penalty box or goalkeepers hands at either end. Zoe R was everywhere at the back, swooping in to clean up on a number of occasions to make sure Ruby ‘the rock’ T was strongly supported. Caringbah had a number of highly skilled players who were watched strongly. Yet with 15 minutes to go the opposition managed to hit a shot which squirmed away from Jannali M P to end up in the back of our net. Going one down seemed to invigorate our midfield of Annabella V and Lexie G who quickly seized on an opportunity at then other end finished off by a gutsy effort from Sadie C so that at half time it was 1-1.
In the second half Marrickville had the better of the game yet failed to capitalise. The game continued to be hard fought with a strong energy led by Hannah R to always let Caringbah there was to be no easy win. The game ended up in extra-time and with tired legs giving way then to a penalty shootout.
A decision was made by coach Sutton to take our young goalkeeper out of danger zone and put our most experienced player Annabella V into goals for the pens. After 3 penalties Marrickville was losing 0-3 and very close to being on the losing side. Yet determination from Hannah and then a cool finish by Annabella along with some fortune meant we were back level. Then Zara smashed home her penalty to take the score to 3-3, followed by an ice-cold finish from Isabel H to seal the game. An awesome effort by the team with the next game against Heathcote HS on the horizon in the near future.
